2022 Solar Generation Index
Quantitative Insights from Leading Asset Owners

With operating data from 500+ utility-scale systems provided by industry partners and our proprietary Heliostats database, kWh Analytics published the third installment of the Solar Generation Index, the industry’s most comprehensive assessment of asset performance. The goal: develop an index to track the magnitude of the industry’s accuracy — or inaccuracy — when determining a solar project’s “most likely production” P50 estimate.

The 2022 analysis compared actual production against financed P50 estimates (target production) and found that weather-adjusted performance in 2021 missed target production by nearly 8% on average. In addition, the report breaks down the trend of underperformance by system capacity, region, and mount type.

We hope that asset owners and financiers can use this report to inform their decision-making and risk mitigation strategies. Importantly, the SGI represents an example of how industry collaboration through groups, like our Solar Performance Management Collaborative, can improve transparency for everyone.
